Stockport County have signed highly-rated young midfielder Charlie Wardle.

The 17-year-old spent over two years with Wigan Athletic’s academy before joining Bury’s academy in April 2015.

In January this year he signed for Northwich Manchester Villa in the Hallmark Security League Division One, where he played in the majority of fixtures during the final three months of the season.

His form was noted by several clubs, but it was York City who offered Wardle the opportunity to join The Minstermen upon their return to The National League.

The Stockport-born youngster then spent the whole of pre-season training with the first-team squad and certainly impressed the Bootham Crescent staff and his more experienced team-mates with his performances.

Wardle appeared in several of the first-team pre-season friendlies, but he left York by mutual consent last month without managing to break into the side in the league.
