Jack Sampson broke the deadlock on Saturday against table-toppers Forest Green Rovers to give Macclesfield Town the lead. Unfortunately, the team went on to lose 2-1 but John Askey was impressed with his striker.
Talking to Silkmen Player HD, Askey said: “I thought Jack Sampson was outstanding today. He showed what he can do and with Styche coming on too, he showed he can be a player at this level. They were the two positives. There were other players that did well but they were the main two.”
Sampson anticipated the poor back pass enabling him to run in on goal and poke home past Rovers’ despairing ‘keeper. The goal topped off a promising performance from the 22-year-old and the manager enjoyed his complete display.
“His all-round play of holding the ball and bringing others into play. He caused them problems as their two centre-halves had to occupy him for the majority of the game. Then when he went wide he ended up scoring. It was just a good all-round performance. Those who say they think he can’t play need to have a look at the video today to realise what a good player he is.”
A heart-breaking goal from Forest Green, coming deep into stoppage time, led to a defeat for Macc but Askey believes the team can improve their current form through more hard work.
“We had a great opportunity there to get three points against top of the league. You talk about taking positives but you can’t keep conceding in that manner so we’ve got to keep working, stick together and hopefully it will eventually turn around.”
