Macclesfield Town midfielder Danny Whitehead has signed for Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee, and will spend the rest of the season at the National League club.

The 22-year-old has signed a two and a half year deal at the DW Stadium and manager Gary Caldwell says he is a player for the future.

“Like Dan Lavercombe, he’s one we have watched at length and identified as having the potential to play at a higher level,” he said.

“Every club is on the lookout for fresh talent and it is a case of acting fast and looking to the future with these signings.

“Now that everything is over the line, like Dan, he will combine his training here and with playing for his former club, as he gains more first team experience and we also get to know him.”

Manchester-born Whitehead began his career at Stockport County, where he made 60 first team appearances, scoring six times. His form led then manager Dietmar Hamman recommending him to West Ham United.

He only played once for The Hammers, however, and moved on to Accrington Stanley last year, and then onto Macclesfield, where he has been a regular this season, making 25 appearances and scoring four goals for the side currently in fifth place in the National League.
