Macclesfield FC owner Robert Smethurst has clarified that the club and Robbie Savage’s The Savage Foundation are entirely separate.
Smethurst’s acquisition of Macclesfield Town’s assets was announced back in October, with the intention to reform as Macclesfield FC also announced.
Robbie Savage was confirmed as head of football operations as part of the run-through of board members at the reformed club.
Smethurst has explained: “Amongst the enormous positivity we have received since the launch of The Savage Foundation last Thursday, it has genuinely saddened and disappointed me to learn that a very small minority of the grassroots sector in Macclesfield seem to have become confused or are blatantly ignorant to the fact that Macclesfield FC and The Savage Foundation are two separate entities. Let me provide absolute clarity on that fact once and for all – Macclesfield FC and The Savage Foundation are totally separate entities!
“As the owner of MFC, I was approached in late-January by Robbie Savage and his independent team, who outlined their vision for The Savage Foundation. I was also made aware at that time that Robbie was also liaising with Sport England, the FA and The Law Family Charitable Foundation to create an organisation that immediately demonstrated to me the incredible opportunities and tangible benefits that his proposal would unquestionably bring to kids in the local Macclesfield community and beyond.
“Macclesfield FC, like other organisations of its kind, have a social responsibility, and under that responsibility, I am extremely proud to be able to offer MFC support to The Savage Foundation, in foregoing any pitch hire fees for two-and-a-half hours on a Tuesday evening to facilitate this happening. To be clear once more, I have no exclusivity in any partnership with The Savage Foundation and they are not bound in any way to use Macclesfield FC.”
