Matlock Town have signed 24-year-old midfielder Michael Hollingsworth from Grantham Town.
Hollingsworth began his career with Nottingham Forrest as a youngster before joining Boston United, where he made several appearances in Conference North. He made the move to Grantham Town permanent by signing a contract in 2015 and became an ever-present fan favourite in their squads for the last three seasons, playing a major part in their run to the play-off finals last season.
The most recent couple of months this season has seen Hollingsworth captain the Gingerbreads and he has four goals in twelve games. He departs Grantham Town having played over 150 times and holds the odd distinction that the Gingerbreads have never lost a game that Hollingsworth has scored in.
Hollingsworth said: “Delighted to be joining Matlock Town and really looking forward to getting in with the lads to kick on and climb up the table.”
Manager Dave Frecklington had the following to say about his new signing: “‘Michael is a player I’ve been watching for a while now and has all the attributes to be a big part of what we want to achieve here at Matlock. He was part of Grantham Town’s play-off campaign last season so he knows what it takes to be successful and is hungry to replicate that feat.
“He knows this level inside out and the one above and will provide fantastic competition for places in central midfield. He is a great character and a winner and I can’t wait to start working with him.”
Hollingsworth is likely to be added to the Gladiators squad for Tuesday night’s home Derbyshire Senior Cup clash with Shirebrook Town (7:45pm).
