Matlock Town have completed the signing of 22-year-old defender Jake Phillips, formerly of Nantwich Town.
Phillips left Tranmere Rovers, where he spent his youth career after narrowly missing out on a professional contract. He joined Llandudno Town FC and during his spell with the Wings, he was part of their Huws Gray Alliance title-winning side in 2015 as a first team regular before being handed an opportunity at the Sheffield United, where he would played for the Blades U21 side until he cancelled his contract by mutual consent.
After having a short spell with Fleetwood Town, he signed for Brackley Town, who he helped avoid relegation from the Conference (National League) North. He spent the pre-season of 2016 with Nottingham Forest but with the club going through new management, new faces were brought in and Phillips was not offered a deal.
He then spent a lot of the first part of the season training with National League clubs such as Bromley and Braintree Town, and then decided to sign for Margate after offers from other National League South sides. He played at centre-back and as a holding midfielder for Margate but due to financial reasons he left the club and signed for then-fellow National League South side Welling United.
In pre-season of 2017, he trained with various teams from National League to the Welsh Premier after which he signed for Llandudno once more. Phillips joined Nantwich Town half-way through the current season and can play anywhere across the back four.
