The return of Kyle May has been a huge boost to the Workington Reds defence, says joint boss Dave Hewson.

Not only has he bolstered the backline, Hewson says he also brings on the players around him. And with the like of Josh Calvert and Sam Smith also returning to the fray, Hewson says his defence is finally all coming together.

“Kyle’s been massive, just what I expected having spoken to him,” said Hewson.

“The first conversation I had with him was about how keen and eager he was to get back in and how he felt like he could still give something at this level.

“I knew straight away from then that he was going to be an asset coming in. He’s been rock solid but, also, I think he has brought on other peoples’ games, as well.

“I think Goose [Dan Wordsworth] has probably been our most consistent and outstanding performer so far this season. As a pair, not many get past them.”
