Gary Waddock isn’t ruling out Adam McDonnell one day playing the Championship again after the midfielder left Ipswich Town on Friday to sign a permanent deal at Aldershot Town.

The 20-year-old originally joined the Shots on loan at the end of August before returning to Ipswich in early December. However, it didn’t take long before McDonnell was back at the EBB Stadium and this time for good as he signed a deal to play for the Shots until the summer of 2019.

And Waddock believes that McDonnell was not only the perfect fit for the Shots, but is a player with a lot of potential.

“He’s been here before on loan and done very well,” Waddock said. “Adam had a very good relationship with the players and the supporters, and I think sometimes when players have a taste of a club they want to come back and we were lucky to get him back because he’s a good player.

“He knows the club and knows the players and I think when he went back to Ipswich he missed them as well. He is still developing as a player so there’s no reason why he can’t eventually go back up the leagues to where he’s come from.”
