Tranmere Rovers fell to a 3-1 defeat at Wembley against Forest Green Rovers in the Promotion Final.

Manager Micky Mellon a couple of costly mistakes during the game but admitted the best team on the day won through to a place in the Football League.

He said: “We didn’t defend in those key moments at the end of the first half well enough and that was massive.

“To go in 2-1 down at half time would have been bad enough but at 3-1 it gave us an uphill task.

“We knew the rules at the start of the season, that if you finish second, you go into a cup competition and today we weren’t good enough on the day to get that final promotion place.

“We’re gutted for the fans who have travelled to support us and spent so much money.

“Just on the day, the better side won, there’s no doubt about that.”
