Merstham boss Frank Wilson was typically philosophical about the FA’s decision to declare this season’s Step 3 and below leagues null and void and revealed, “I’d trade relegation for getting life back to normal”.

Amiable Wilson is fully aware that people in the game think the Moatsiders have dodged a bullet given they were second from bottom of the Isthmian League Premier and in real danger of a drop to Step 4 with nine matches to play.

But in terms of form, his side had produced a run as good as they had achieved all season in their last eight league matches played, before the Covid-19 outbreak, winning two and drawing four.

Whether that upturn in fortunes would have been enough to survive will never be known.

“I still don’t think people are grasping the magnitude of this situation,” said Wilson. “We are in for some tough times, all of us. For us to have our football taken away is difficult and so many players I have spoken to they are really struggling with the mental side of things. They need to get back to a routine.”
