Merstham manager Frank Wilson admits Saturday’s game at Wingate & Finchley is “very important” after three successive defeats.

But the Moatsiders boss insists he isn’t just looking for three points going in the Isthmian League Premier Division fixture – he wants the performance to “back it up”.

It comes after Merstham were knocked out of the FA Cup last weekend by local rivals Whyteleafe, who play a step lower in the Isthmian League South-East Division,

And while there was only one goal in it – Antonio Walker-Barth scoring on the half-hour mark – Wilson admits the Moatsiders did not deserve to beat Leafe.

“We didn’t deserve a result and we would have been lucky if we had nicked something towards the end of the game I felt,” he said. “For long periods of the game, we just weren’t good enough.

“We had a stronger finish to the game because it’s an FA Cup tie and they are winning 1-0 to they don’t want to take any risks.”
