York City manager Gary Mills wants Darren Caskey to join him as his assistant at Bootham Crescent.
Mills was re-appointed York manager three days after he was sacked by National League rivals Wrexham.
Former Spurs striker Caskey, who also worked with Mills at Gateshead, remains under contract at Wrexham.
“I’m hoping, before Saturday if we can or if not next week, he’s going to come and join me,” Mills told BBC Radio York.
“Unfortunately he’s contracted at Wrexham at the moment so we’re having to go through that side of it.
“Darren Caskey has worked with me for the last couple of seasons and we work well together.”
Mills will take charge of York for Monday’s FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay at Curzon Ashton.
Wrexham’s temporary management team of Joey Jones, Andy Davies and Dean Keates will be in charge for the club’s FA Cup replay against Stamford on Tuesday.
They were put in charge for Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stamford following Mills’ departure on Thursday.
