Redditch United boss Paul Smith was left to rue ‘defensive lapses’ as the Reds were consigned to a 2-0 defeat against local rivals Stratford Town on Saturday.
After a goalless half hour, The Blues scored twice in quick concession from set-pieces. Despite plenty of endeavour in the second half, Smith’s charges were unable to mount a comeback, which left him frustrated but encouraged as well:
“It’s a disappointing defeat; it’s a group that is low on confidence after a run of poor results, but I thought for the first half hour we were in the game; however, we suffered another defensive lapse and didn’t show enough concentration, which allowed the opposition to score from set-pieces.
“It was always going to be a tough game after a tricky week – players coming in and going – but I felt we showed some promise, and there is plenty for us to work on this week ahead of the trip to Biggleswade on Saturday.”
During Smith’s first week in charge, he wasted no time in bolstering his squad, bringing in the likes of Ed Wagner, Robbie Bunn and Sam Tye – Dave Reynolds followed but wasn’t available for Saturday’s encounter – and has admitted that more signings are likely:
“It’s no secret that we’re looking to strengthen the squad; we need a few more bodies to compete for places and give us a bit more quality. I expect us to make some additions in the next week or two.”
