A ‘safe standing’ terrace will be part of the new stadium being proposed for Torquay United, says club chairman Clarke Osborne, report Devon Live.
The 10,000-capacity stadium, which could be increased to 30,000 for events like concerts, rallies and other major sports events, is part of a £40 million leisure complex which Osborne’s Gaming International company wants to build at Barton’s Nightingale Park.
But Gulls fans, many of whom have stood on Plainmoor’s Popular Side for generations, are among supporters across the country who want to retain or restore ‘safe’ terraces, and Osborne has vowed to include a section in the new stadium.
“My view is that safe standing adds to the atmosphere and to the convenience of the supporters,” he said. “That’s where they get their most enjoyment and, absolutely, I envisage it as part of the new stadium.”
