Former Hartlepool United man Nicky Deverdics is delighted to have escaped the downward spiral at Victoria Park.

The former Newcastle United youngster left the Vic on deadline day to pen a deal at Wrexham – a move which earned cash-strapped Pools £10,000. It was an exit that was not met with too much anger among Poolies, given that Deverdics, signed as a creative spark, failed to light any fires during an underwhelming 18 months in Cleveland.

And Deverdics accepts Pools did not see the best of him, but also that he’s excited to be heading to a club with promotion ambitions, rather than one staring into the abyss.

“I am excited to get started, I am going somewhere positive where you are looking up not down, completely different to what I have been used to over the last 18 months,” said the 30-year-old. “I worked hard at Dover to get them into the league, I played there with Hartlepool but unfortunately we came down – but this is a chance to go back up as Wrexham are pushing for promotion.”
