Council chiefs have approved plans to begin construction of York City’s new community stadium at Monks Cross.
On Thursday night, the City of York Council Executive unanimously approved a report which recommended the council enter into legal agreements over the new stadium with Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL).
Contractors will move onto the site in October and the main construction phase is expected to take 16 months.
The 8,000 capacity all-seater stadium will be ‘home’ to both York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Club.
City chairman Jason McGill believes the move will help safeguard the long-term future of York City Football Club.
If things go according to plan, City supporters will be watching their team at the new stadium at the start of the 2019/2020 season.
