Sean Newton says he is honoured to be named captain of York City for the new season.

Newton who joined the club last season from Wrexham was given the armband by by Gary Mills at the start of pre-season.

After taking the role, Newton said it was a proud moment for him.

“I’m made up to be captain of this club, I have nothing but praise to have gained this role, we had a set back last season but I have really enjoyed my time here so far.”

“We have a great set of lads, I don’t think this will change me into of my role, I was vocal last season and on the pitch as well. We have had seven additions and they have integrated well, we had a trip away we have gelled really well, it’s the best I have seen.”

York City start their first game in the National League North at Bootham Crescent against AFC Telford United, with Newton saying it is a crucial match.

“The first game is always the hardest as no one wants to lose, it can be edgy games because you want to make that good start, we really do with it being at home as well.

“The best thing you can do in that first game is win and in style, we want teams to come here and be scared, we want this to be a fortress this campaign.”
