North Shields have announced that Brian Smith has resigned from his position as manager.
Smith leaves with the team in 4th position in the Ebac Northern League and the club posted this statement from the outgoing boss on their website:
‘It is with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to resign as manager of this fantastic football club.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the last five years since Fents and Bowsa brought me to the club to assist them. Culminating in the best day I’ve experienced in my time in non league football.
This season promised so much but ultimately has fallen short of the standards I believe have been set over that period of time. It certainly hasn’t been from a lack of hard work from those involved in the playing side and behind the scenes. Sometimes its just not meant to be and it’s not a decision I have made flippantly. I could sit here as the manager and continue like so many do but that’s not me. Alan, Mike and Trevor have tried their utmost to make me stay but it’s my belief that a change is needed for the club to move forward.
I’ve been lucky enough to have learnt from someone who is streets ahead of anyone I’ve come across in my time in football and I’d like to think even though the results have not been good this season, the preparation and the set up of the team have been a continuation of the standards set over the last few years.
What we have at North Shields is something very special. We have a group of players who are second to none and a huge credit to this club. They are a loyal, dedicated group which I have had great pleasure in working with. Their dedication is shown by so many of them having achieved an outstanding number of playing appearances. This is a testimony to them and to this club as I’m sure many would agree that this is unusual in the Northern League.
I would specifically like to thank Kevin Hughes, who has been a great help to me and has been a superb captain over my time involved with North Shields.
We have a committee who get a lot of stick, and yes I agree they have their faults, like every committee and can get better(can’t we all), but they have done nothing but back me as much as they can financially and I thank them for that. You would not believe what we have to compete with where budgets are concerned and that itself is a credit to the set up we have and to the players we have. That will continue when the new manager takes over.
And last but by no means least, the supporters. Some of you divide opinion across the league and yes I’ve had to split up the odd altercation but you have given me nothing but your full support this year in difficult circumstances when things haven’t gone well. You have gone out of your way to help one another in times of need whether that be from me asking you to help raise funds for the club, for charity events and more recently when raising money for Frankie Sherwood and young Jack Fieldhouse. This goes unnoticed by a lot of people however, you all should be proud of this as this is what makes North Shields a great club and town. People always want to see the negatives and moan, however sometimes you need to look closely at what we have and think of the positives.
The club has progressed so much in a short period of time and needs to keep progressing. I’m sure it will and that challenge will be taken on by us all. I wish Everyone at North Shields well and thank you for your support
