Northampton Town have signed the highly-rated Stockport County attacking midfielder Matty Warburton on a two-year contract, effective from July 1st.
Warburton, who scored 27 goals and was voted Stockport’s player of the season as County won the National League North title, has been attracting interest from a number of clubs in the EFL, but the Cobblers have won the race for his signature. He joined Stockport County in May 2017 after netting 13 goals in 16 appearances for Curzon Ashton after a spell with Salford City.
In two seasons, Warburton, who can also play in the number ten role, scored 48 goals for County, including finding the net in the 3-1 Emirates FA Cup win at Yeovil Town in November 2018 which was one of 40 goals during the calendar year.
“We are really pleased to be able to bring Matty in,” said manager Keith Curle. “Either myself, Simon Tracey or our scouts have watched Matty more than half a dozen times, we have done our homework on his character and we believe we are signing a player with a massive desire and hunger to do well in the EFL.
