A third successive ‘clean sheet’ chuffed Torquay United head coach Gary Owers after the Gulls had halted high-scoring Aldershot Town and knocked them off the top of the National League in the process.

“We played against a very good team, and I am pleased that in the last three games we have conceded no goals,” said Owers.

“I thought it was a good solid performance, particularly in the second half when we took the game to Aldershot a bit more than in the first half.

“We might have nicked it in the end. We have put three games together now, and we have to try and build on that.

“I couldn’t fault anyone – the lads at the back are defending very resolutely, and in midfield Luke Young and Damon Lathrope are winning lots of second balls and putting their feet in.”
