Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant is set to complete a move to big-spending Bostik League club Billericay Town.

The thirty four year old becomes the latest former Premier League star to join the Blues, joining former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara and former Fulham left back Paul Konchesky at the AGP Arena.

Pennant began his career with Notts County but joined Arsenal at the age of fifteen for a reported £2m fee.

He made his debut within a year in a Worthington Cup game against Middlesbrough, becoming the youngster player to play for the Gunners in their history.

His six-year stay with Arsenal saw the winger spend loan spells with Watford, Leeds United and Birmingham City, before joining the latter for a £3m fee in April 2005.

Pennant’s form at St Andrews captured the attention of Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez and he took the winger to Anfield for a fee of £6.7m.

His time at Liverpool saw Pennant start the Champions League Final against AC Milan in 2007 as the Italians avenged their famous defeat by the Reds in the 2005 final.

Released by Liverpool in 2009, Pennant joined Spanish club Real Zaragoza and spent one season in La Liga before moving back to England with Stoke City in August 2010.

After leaving Stoke in 2014, Pennant has had spells with the likes of Indian side Pune City, Wigan Athletic and Singaporean club Tampines Rovers.

Now, ten years after starting a Champions League Final, Pennant joins Billericay Town despite interest from Scottish club Hibernian and becomes the latest star name to join a club targeting the Football League under ambitious owner Glenn Tamplin.

Pennant is believed to have been offered a two-year deal worth £3,000 a week, an offer that would take the Blues wage bill over £30,000 a week.

Speaking to The Sun, Tamplin said  “Jermaine will be a great signing and will help us get to where we want to go.

“We all know he is a top player. He is good mates with Jamie O’Hara and when he heard about what we are doing, he let it know he wanted to come here.
“The fact Jermaine chose us over Hibs shows how much we are growing.

“Jermaine’s ability will make us even stronger and his experience will help our younger players reach the next level.”

Pennant is set to officially join Billericay after playing for the club in a friendly against Leyton Orient on Saturday.
