Port Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite has denied reports he is interested in buying Gateshead FC, Stoke on Trent Live report.

Smurthwaite has been linked with interest in the National League club in the North East media but says he’s not considering a deal for the club.

Football League and National League rules would prevent him from owning the club at the same time that he is owner of Port Vale, although he was allowed to become landlord of National League North side Nuneaton Borough in the summer.

The Vale owner told The Sentinel he has had contact with Gateshead when Neil Aspin left them to join Vale as manager in 2017, and again when Vale bought Luke Hannant last January. He says Vale had also been in touch since then about another player recommended by Aspin, but he’s not considering buying the club.
