Jake Robinson struck yet again for Billericay Town as they came back to beat Metropolitan Police 5-3 to win the Velocity Trophy..
The 31-year-old striker’s two goals in the 5-3 victory against Staines Town on Monday took him onto 52 for the season, meaning he surpassed the previous record held by Leon Gutzmore set in 1997/98. Robinson, who was signed last March in a deal worth £24,000, has been a roaring success in the colours of Billericay blue and he made it 53 as they came back to beat Met Police and secure another trophy, having already won the Essex Senior Cup.
Robinson had told The Basildon Standard before the game:
“The goal record has been mentioned a lot since about November but back then it felt a long way away,” said Robinson, who replaced the injured Ricky Modeste on 57 minutes against Staines. “I didn’t want to make it hard for myself but focusing on it and the last seven weeks have been hard so it has been difficult to get going again.
“It was great to get the goals in such an important game. Once I got the first I was determined to get the second otherwise I would feel like a batsman on 99 not out.
“And I heard from Leon as well. He sent me a very nice tweet to congratulate me on the record. I know how highly regarded he is and it is nice to hear words from someone like that.”
