Wrexham boss Dean Keates has heaped praise on his players after Saturday’s emphatic 4-0 win over Torquay at the Racecourse.

Chris Holroyd scored a hat-trick as Wrexham returned to winning ways and climbed to fourth in the National League table. And Keates expressed his delight at the performance following last week’s disappointment against Barrow.

“I thought it was on the cards that we were going to get a couple eventually,” he said. “Full credit to the lads, I thought they were outstanding today. We did the damage first half.

“Second half it wasn’t great and we weren’t as fluent as we wanted to be. But we counter attacked and I thought the lads were awesome.

“We just needed to win a football match, so if it’d been 1-0 it would’ve been the same. It was nice to score the four goals but it was about getting the three points.”

Wrexham’s top scorer was at the centre of attention in the victory, sealing a clinical hat-trick with an 89th minute penalty. Keates, who admitted he is now in the market for another forward, was effusive in his praise for Holroyd.

“Chris is a delight, he’s a great pro,” he said. “I brought him in and I knew he was going to score goals. He’s very intelligent; we asked him to play in a different position and he’s gone about his business and not moaned. Today he’s got his reward.

“As it stands we’ve only got two forwards. It’s something that needs to be addressed over the next week.

“We’ve got a two-week window now. I’d like to think we’ll have somebody in the building in the next seven days.

“We’re looking at other positions. We want to add to the squad. We probably need a few more numbers to just give us a bit of strength. But I want players who are going to force the lads in the team to perform better.”
