Robert Smethurst has acquired the assets of Macclesfield Town, who will go under the new name of Macclesfield FC.

The Cheshire club will retain their previous brand and logo, while club legend Danny Whitaker will become manager. Local businessman Smethurst has said the aim is to get the club into the North West Counties Football League next season.

In addition, former Premier League midfielder and Wales international Robbie Savage will become a board member and head of football operations, overseeing first team to Under-16s. New boss Whitaker had been announced as re-signing as a player shortly before the winding-up announcement, having already been on Tim Flowers’ staff as an assistant manager.

The executive board also comprises ex-Macclesfield Town vice-chairman Andy Scott, former supporters’ trust chairman and current SST board member Jon Smart, experienced commercial operations manager Lindsay Brown and former FC United star Carlos Roca as director of football.
