Misfiring Aldershot Town came crashing back down to earth against Hartlepool (October 12) after thrashing Dover 4-0 and boss Danny Searle admitted “it was a bad day at the office.”
The Shots boss saw his men lose 3-0 at the EBB on Non-League Day against a club who sacked their manager in the week leading up to the clash.
It could have been so different had referee Ryan Atkin handed Aldershot a penalty when Ethan Chislett was brought down in the third minute. Hartlepool had hardly touched the ball up to that point, but play was waved on and 45 seconds later Josh Hawkes put the visitors ahead.
“It was the difference between clinical finishing and not,” said Searle. “The disappointment was the first goal came from a break from what should have been a penalty [to us].”
“Even the fourth official said in his opinion it was a penalty and the majority of people in the stadium thought so too, all except for the man who really counts and that’s the referee. Where we stood appealing for it, the bottom line is we had to get ourselves back in and they took their chance.
“They were a good side but we weren’t at our best.”
