Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders has signed a new one-year contract as the Stones announced that they are to go full-time next season.

The club are currently sat in the Vanarama National League relegation zone, but have shown their faith in the former Gillingham player by handing him a new deal.jay saunders maidstone

Stones co-owner Oliver Ash said “This season has been very challenging.

“We have all made mistakes at times and we’ve got to learn from them going forward.

“But we enjoy working with Jay. He and his family are part of the club and part of the town.

“We feel he belongs here and we’re thrilled he does too. He will be our manager next season come what may and hopefully next season will be an even better one on the pitch that next season.”

Saunders was appointed as Stones boss in March 2011, after spending two spells with the club as a player.

It was during the second when he stepped up to replace Andy Ford as manager and since then he has led them back to non-league’s top tier.

After signing his new contract he said “I’m delighted and I can now put it to bed and concentrate fully on what lies ahead.

“It gives us a chance to start looking forward to next season and our day-time training”.

Saunders takes his side to Braintree Town in the National League on Saturday.
