Chester FC have announced that Ian Sharps is to leave the club to join League One outfit Walsall as first-team coach.

Chester`s chief executive Mark Maguire said: “We are genuinely disappointed to lose Ian who has made a significant contribution to the team during his time here as a player and more recently supporting Jon McCarthy – we are grateful for his hard work, commitment and professionalism.

“It is a natural consequence that as we progress and succeed individuals will attract the attention of clubs at a higher level, our ambition is for as many as possible to progress higher with Chester FC but almost inevitably a few will get there slightly quicker. This is a great opportunity for Ian; it’s two leagues higher and closer to his home, and we wish him and Walsall – who have acted in the appropriate manner throughout – all the very best for the future.

“We will be advertising for a replacement for Ian immediately and in the meantime Jon and the squad are fully focussed on continuing their fantastic efforts which were there for all to see last Saturday at Tranmere Rovers.

“In Jon McCarthy we have an absolutely top class coach and manager who has been the architect of a complete transformation of the professional environment at the club and we look forward to many more great days under his stewardship”.
