The Republic of Ireland international is to link up with the NWCFL First Division South club and ‘will be helping to drive the club to its next phase of development.’ The 35-year-old has long been regarded as one of the Championship’s most accomplished goalkeepers, having also played in the Premier League for Sunderland, and the former Manchester City youngster has been brought in by Cheadle Town as chairman Craig Brennan bids to build a ‘high-performing board to drive the club strategy forward.’

The club have spoken of ambitions to reach the National League, and Wythenshawe-raised Westwood told the club’s website: “Non-league football is something I have always followed, having played non-league myself very early in my career (for Mossley), and also having lots of friends who play non-league football means I’m always checking results and interested in what’s happening.

“When Craig explained his vision for the club and how he wanted to create a professional football club whilst keeping the community ethos, it really interested me, and I know my experience, knowledge and network will add plenty of value.”
