After an exciting game at the Moss Rose which resulted in a 2-0 defeat to Championship side Derby County, Macclesfield Town assistant manager Steve Watson spoke to the Silkmen’s YouTube channel to share his thoughts on the game, the result, and his players.
Steve said: “Obviously you want to win every game but we were playing against a full strength, top end Championship team and I thought for large spells we did very, very well.
“I thought we caused them problems, in the first half we had as many chances as they did, there were some very good first performances and in pre-season you are looking for lads to improve your squad and some of the lads did themselves a lot of favours today.”
Steve went on to discuss some of the players making their debuts in front of the home faithful at the Moss Rose on Saturday afternoon.
He said: “I thought we looked very bright, Scott Burgess looked very good in midfield, Courtney held the bottom of the field as we wanted him to do…Elliott Durrell, Scott Wilson, Ryan Lloyd – there were some good performances. It would be wrong to pick any individuals out because you could go through the whole team.
“They did very well against a side that will be near the top of the Championship at the end of the season. There were no injuries which is the main thing at this stage of pre-season. We didn’t want to give anyone more than 50 or so minutes, with another good game to come on Tuesday.”
Despite the result there were plenty of positives to take from the game against higher level opposition…
“At one stage or another Derby had a near full-strength side out. I think Derby would have enjoyed that, we are a team that tries to play as well, and go through the thirds in the first half especially.”
