Macclesfield Town manager John Askey has expressed his delight of reaching the fourth round of the Buildbase FA Trophy after his side defeated Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.
The Silkmen took on Rovers who are currently second in the National League and produced a fine performance to become victorious 1-0 at the Moss.
Danny Whitehead got the goal for Macc, as his deflected shot hit the back of the net midway through the first-half.
Speaking after the game, John said: “I couldn’t ask for anymore off the players. They worked hard and defended really well against a very good team.
“When you’re 1-0 up and when you’re trying to defend the lead, you drop a lot deeper than you would want too. But then we weren’t able to get pressure on their defenders so they looked to play long balls to us.
“Having said that, they didn’t open us up at all. The main thing is that we are through.
“We were limited to very little chances but we did have the better chances- even though we had to defend. We hit the post and obviously, Danny scored, Chris (Holroyd) could have wrapped it up at the end but it’s really pleasing.”
Despite getting through to the next round, the gaffer has told mtfc.co.uk that the lads must enjoy the win first then turn their concentration towards the league where the Silkmen will make the long trip to Torquay United on Saturday.
“We can enjoy the win and then it’s all about the league. “We have Torquay on Saturday now and if we fight like that, we have got a chance.”
