Macclesfield Town have paid tribute to former defender Matt Carragher, who has passed away at the age of 40.

A statement on the Silkmen website read “Macclesfield Town Football Club are saddened to hear of the passing of former Silkmen defender Matt Carragher at the age of 40.

Having played for Wigan Athletic, Port Vale and Stafford Rangers Matt moved to Macclesfield in November 2003 after signing for current boss John Askey who at the time was in caretaker charge.

Carragher used his experience and versatility to good effect as a right-back, wide-right midfielder and best of all, as sweeper where he always read the game well.

In total he made 57 appearances for the Silkmen during a two-year spell at the Moss. After leaving Macclesfield Matthew retired from professional football.

Our thoughts are with Matt’s friends and family at this time”
