Despite Macclesfield Town’s loss to Woking on Saturday, assistant manager Steve Watson believes our squad has what it takes to succeed this season.

After a busy summer transfer window with a very different squad to last campaign, there is plenty of competition for places.

Watson spoke to SilkmenTV about the adaptability of our defence, particularly as Adam Yates returned to Port Vale after his loan spell at the club and Jared Hodgkiss slowly regaining fitness after his injury.

He said: “It may be a case of putting in someone at right-back that can do a job for us there. We know Noe Baba has played right back before for Birmingham. He played against Sutton at right back and didn’t do a lot wrong.

“We’ll have a look at the way they play and what suits us to see what will work for Saturday. After having one player signed in June, to get a good squad together to compete is brilliant and if there’s one position we are not strong in then so be it, we will have to get on with it.”

Following Saturday’s defeat to Woking the players in the Silkmen side will be looking to make an impression on the coaching team in training this week.

“We threw down the gauntlet to the lads – we have lost a game and missed a lot of chances. It is down to them now to go and impress us in training this week. Score as many goals as you can and you may get your chance.”
