Macclesfield Town have announced the signing of midfielder Richie Wellens.

The 36-year old will join up with John Askey’s side after leaving National League North side Salford City in October.

The former Leicester City captain has a tonne of experience in the football league where he played over 100 games for the current Premier League Champions as well as over 190 appearances for Blackpool.

Wellens started his career off at Manchester United where he made one appearance against Aston Villa in the League Cup during 1999. He then moved to Blackpool and quickly became a fan favourite.

After spells with Oldham Athletic and Doncaster, Leicester then snatched up the centre-midfielder for over £1m and he was named the club’s key player of the 2009-10 season by the BBC.

In recent years he joined Shrewsbury Town and then signed for Salford to join back up with his former United teammates.
