South Shields chairman Geoff Thompson will be standing as an independent candidate to be South Shields’ next MP.
A Shields local, Thompson has announced his bid ahead of the upcoming general election on 12th December. He will be submitting his nomination this Wednesday (13th November) at the Town Hall (6pm) and has invited supporters to join him.
Thompson has overseen South Shields’ rise up the leagues since he took over the Mariners in 2015, with last season’s league runners-up bidding to go one better and win promotion this season to the National League North.
He told the Shields Gazette: “If I am elected I will focus on delivering new jobs, more investment in public services, enhanced opportunities for our young people and defending service provision for our elderly people, and because I am not answerable to a political party, my only loyalty will be to the people of South Shields and Whitburn.”
