Southport have announced that changes have been made to the structure of the club’s academy system, with the Under-21 team being discontinued.
The National League North club say that after meetings with the management and coaching staff, it has been decided that the Under-17 and Under-18 teams will continue, but not the Under-21s.
As part of a statement from the club, it was pointed out that ‘in reality, any players at U21 level should be playing first-team football at non-league level.’
Southport say they are supporting any players who were part of this Under-21 set-up in finding new clubs. Additionally, the club will be launching its Academy College Structure, with their Academy and College transitioning to a full-time model from the current part-time approach.
