South Shields have announced the return of forward David Foley from Spennymoor Town.
Foley, who scored 49 goals for the Mariners in his first spell, has rejoined with immediate effect. It is hoped he will be available to make his second debut for the club in Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Garforth Town at Mariners Park.
The former Hartlepool United, Puerto Rico Islanders and Fort Lauderdale Strikers player won five trophies in his first stint at Shields, between 2015 and 2017. He scored twice at Wembley as the Mariners won the FA Vase in 2017, and was also among the scorers in the Durham Challenge Cup final the same year as the club swept its way to four trophies.
Foley has expressed his delight at rejoining his hometown club.
He said: “I’m delighted to be back. As soon as I walked back through the gates, the memories came flooding back.
“I really enjoyed my first spell here and have lots of good memories, so hopefully we can kick on and make some new ones. When I left, the time was right to do that.
“Now it feels right to be back and to try to help the club continue the momentum.”
He added: “I’m really pleased to be back home and my family are over the moon that I’ve come back.
“I’ve missed the fans. I remember one away day last season with Spennymoor, I was at Wetherby Services with the team and there were two bus loads of fans from South Shields travelling back from their game that day who didn’t stop singing my name for 15 minutes.
“People at Wetherby Services must have been thinking, ‘what is going on?!’ That was a special moment for me personally.
“The goal is to take the club somewhere it has never been, and hopefully I can be a part of that.”
Joint manager Lee Picton said: “We’re delighted to bring David back to South Shields FC.
“Having worked with him previously, we know that he has all the playing attributes and personal qualities that we look for when bringing new signings to the club. I’m sure this is a signing that will greatly excite the fans and we’re looking forward to David’s second spell here hopefully being even more productive than the first.
“We feel he could be a key acquisition in our pursuit of our goals this season.”
