The attacking midfielder played a major role in Barrow’s recent promotion to League Two, weighing in with 20 goals overall. He now joins a Stockport side undergoing plenty of change, with County intent on making their return to the EFL after nine years away.

Rooney signs on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, with manager Jim Gannon telling the club’s website: “We are all delighted John has joined us at County. I think this signing is a real statement of intent on behalf of Stockport County.

“In my recent squad update, I had highlighted a strong desire to add goals, creativity and quality to our frontline. In that regard, Simon Wilson has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to attract players that can be regarded as amongst the best in the league.”
