Luke Summerfield says there was never any doubt that he was going to take Wrexham’s first penalty of the season against Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday.

Sam Ricketts’ side weren’t awarded a spot-kick in the opening 15 games but that changed when Kevin Roberts was brought down in the second half at Victoria Road. Summerfield, who converted the Reds’ last penalty in the final pre-season friendly with Forest Green, assumed spot-kick duties despite Mike Fondop wanting to take it and the midfielder scored as his side won 2-1.

“I was always going to get the penalty,” said Summerfield.

“I couldn’t get the ball off him, anybody else I would have been alright; Mike is a big, strong lad and coming on he wants to score a penalty but I am the penalty taker and luckily enough it went in for us.”
