Sutton United’s central defender Simon Downer has joined Hampton & Richmond Borough following his release from The U’s.
Linking up with former teammate Craig Dundas, Downer’s signing follows the departure of Mcleod-Urqhuart, adding valuable National League experience to the Beavers backline. Downer, 36, began his career with Leyton Orient, making 80 Football League appearances, going on to start for them in the 2001 League 2 Play-Off Final at Wembley.
His time at Sutton United was a memorable one, with the defender going on to make over 250 appearances at Gander Green Lane. A fan favourite, Downer even managed to see 85 minutes out in goal in a game against Torquay in February 2017 – coming on at 1-0 down and inspiring The U’s to a 3-2 win.
With spells at Dagenham & Redbridge and Maidenhead on his CV, manager Gary McCann will be hoping his understanding and experience will inspire and guide the Beavers squad throughout the rest of the season.
Downer will be available for selection for Saturday’s fixture against Chelmsford City – a 3pm kick-off at Jezzards Beveree Stadium.
