Shortwood United have named former reserve team boss Paul Meredith as caretaker manager until the end of the season after parting company with Alex Sykes on Tuesday.
Meredith – who stepped down as second string boss last season for personal reasons but was still involved at Meadowbank and is the father of Woods stalwart Liam and his brother Ryan – will be at the helm for the Gloucestershire club’s three remaining fixtures, starting with a visit from Swindon Supermarine on Saturday.
Former Bishop’s Cleeve boss and England Futsal international Sykes had been the EVO-STIK League Southern Division One South & West club’s sole manager since the start of the 2016-17 season after originally being appointed as joint manager alongside John Evans four years ago in 2013.
In a short statement announcing the news, a Woods spokesman said: “Following recent discussions between club president Richard Webb, the Shortwood United Football Committee and Alex Sykes, the club have to announce that Alex Sykes has left the position of first team manager of the club.
“Alex and the club’s aspirations for the future do not correlate. Shortwood would like to thank Alex for his service to the club and wish him well in his future career.
“Paul Meredith will take charge for the remaining three games with Will Morford and hopefully Andy Hoskins assisting him and a decision as to the future management will be made at the end of the season.”
After hosting Swindon Supermarine on Saturday, the Woods travel to Slimbridge on Easter Monday and round-off the campaign at home to Barnstaple Town on Saturday 22 April.
