Dave Symington has left Vanarama National League club Barrow AFC to pursue a career outside of football.

The right-sided full-back or midfielder had been set to start this weekend’s National League match at Kidderminster Harriers, filling the berth left by the season-ending injury to Ritchie Sutton.

However, Symington called boss Paul Cox on Friday night and told him he had been offered a new role away from the game. As a result, he asked to be released from his contract.

“Dave’s going to get himself a job,” said Cox of the former Carlisle United man, who joined AFC in the summer. “He was a little bit uncertain about what he wanted to do in the future, he’s been interviewed for a job and he needed to start straight away.

“He asked me if it was okay to cancel his contract so that he could follow a different career path.

“I’ve had a talk with the lad and said not to pack up completely, not to give up on his dreams. It all came out of the blue a little bit.”
