Tamworth boss Andy Morrell felt his players went ‘toe to toe’ with leaders Salford City on Saturday despite being edged out of their National League North clash.

The Lambs led the fixture thanks to a goal from Aman Verma but the Ammies hit back to win thanks to a 25-yard free-kick from Mark Shelton and Mike Phenix header.

“I think we played great,” said Morrell. “The first half, I thought we were very good and created some chances.

“We caused them all sorts of problems and moved the ball really well.

“We took the lead but were then undone by a 25-yard rocket and a set-piece in the second half.

“We weren’t as good after the break and we could have been a bit more positive going forward. We were a little bit safe and didn’t quite have the energy levels we had shown earlier in the game.

“But I am pleased with the way my guys went about their business and the attitude they showed towards the game.

“They worked hard and showed plenty of endeavour and if they play like that we will win a lot more games than we lose.”
