Dominic Roma has been one of the busiest managers about this summer since being handed the player-manager post at Gainsborough Trinity
And Matt Thornhill has become the latest to join Roma’s new-look squad, while Stephen Brogan and Simon Russell have both left the club after terms could not be agreed between parties.
Thornhill is an attacking midfielder, with goals in his armour. At 27, he is a good age and started his career as a youngster at Nottingham Forest.
Breaking into the first team at the City Ground, he netted 5 goals in just shy of forty games for the club.
From Forest, he spent time on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion and Cheltenham Town, and earned himself a deal in the Scottish Premier League with Hibernian.
More recently, the 6`1” midfielder spent time at Shaw Lane Aquaforce, where he captained the side with distinction, leading the team to second in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South table, one point behind eventual winners Stafford Rangers, before losing in the play-off final against Coalville Town.
Prior to his spell at Shaw Lane, Thornhill was at Buxton, where he was again in amongst the goals – and his proven track record is one that is sure to excite the Trinity faithful.
Roma said: “I’m excited at the prospect of Matt being at the club. He will add a lot of quality to our midfield having played for Forrest and in the SPL. He isn’t a stranger to non-League level either. Matt is another leader – and another player who really wants to be at the club. He was really keen to join – and things are really starting to take shape now. I can’t wait to get pre-season underway.”
Thornhill, on his signing said: “I am really pleased to be a part of what Dominic is building at Trinity this season and am glad to be signed early, so I can get a good pre-season under my belt.
“I really feel I can help the team and channel my experience in a positive way. The manager is busy recruiting the right sort of players and I think we have a good chance of hitting the ground running, as a squad, when we start pre-season”.
