Basford United boss Steve Chettle believes the new two-year deal for Matt Thornhill sets an important marker in terms of the club’s ambitions.

The ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder has been captain at the Northern Premier Division side, and Forest legend Chettle explained to the club’s website:

“It’s vitally important that we set out to continue where we have been for the last two incomplete seasons, and Matt has been a massive part of that, plus he has been a key figure in the success of Basford United for the last five years.

“His attitude to all parts of the games and training is an example to all, and his contribution in assists and goals over those years has been fantastic. For the captain to commit to the next two years is brilliant and shows his desire to move forward with Basford United, which is what everybody wants.

“He is a fans’ favourite, and for your captain to commit to this deal shows his intentions for the next two years. It’s great to have Matty sorted and I’m sure, like everyone else, can’t wait to get restarted again.”
