Woking manager Alan Dowson suffered what he described as “the worst 45 minutes in my management career” in an embarrassing 6-2 National League defeat at Sutton United and then declared: “I’ve taken this team as far as I can.”

The amiable Geordie qualified that statement by confirming he was severing his loyalty to some players, not considering his own position – yet at least – and he pledged to “bring five or six” new men in.

The Cards boss also questioned whether the club’s ambition matches his own and intimated it being a crossroads saying they must back him given the strong position they remain in – still just two points off the play-offs in 10th – or risk losing him.
