Torquay United could not ask for a better time and place than Saturday at Plainmoor (3pm) to take on National League South promotion rivals Welling United, says Gulls manager Gary Johnson.

United meet second-placed Welling four days after going two points clear at the top of the table with a fourth successive win (2-0 at Dartford), and Johnson insists: “It’s the game that you want at this stage.

“We’re on a nice run of form, we’ve had two very good away performances (United also won 2-0 at Dulwich Hamlet last Saturday) and every time you get a result, you put a little bit of distance between you and the chasing pack.

“Welling have two games in hand, they are strong, they play good football and they are probably one of the best teams we’ve faced so far. It will be a really good test for both teams.”

The Gulls have no new injury worries – winger Opi Edwards (thigh) should be back for next weekend’s FA Trophy tie at Boreham Wood.

They also have the ‘hottest’ pair of strikers in the division, with Jamie Reid on a run of 16 goals in 17 games and Bristol City loanee Saikou Janneh scoring seven in ten.
