Torquay United have named their former defender Aaron Downes as assistant manager.

The 33-year-old Australian played for the Gulls from 2012 to 2015 before spending the last three years of his playing career at Cheltenham Town.

He now joins Gary Johnson’s coaching staff, reuniting with a manager he played for at Cheltenham.

Former Socceroos Under-23 player Downes made his name at Chesterfield after non-league stints at Hampton & Richmond Borough and Frickley Athletic.
