Defender Aaron Barnes got his first taste of action for Torquay United in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Macclesfield Town at Moss Rose.

After joining on loan from Charlton too late to be considered for the match against Eastleigh, and a knock ruling him out of the defeat against Bromley, he was finally able to put in a first team appearance. It came in midfield, not his natural position but one that he took on without question.

“I knew I was playing the day before when we were doing some shape work in training,” said Barnes. “I started in centre midfield which is not a position I have played that often recently. I have played there during my youth team days, during my time at Arsenal and Charlton. I feel like I have the skill set to play in midfield. I’m just happy to play wherever the head coach wants me to. It was a great experience.”

Barnes caught the eye on Saturday. He exuded confidence in the middle of the park and was a key component in keeping the Silkmen at bay, and getting United on the front foot.

“The Gaffer asked me to do the job of a defensive midfielder. I see myself as being able to do all roles in midfield. My job was to keep it simple and to keep the ball moving.”
