Head-coach Gary Owers admitted: “At 3-0 down the game was over at half-time, and I don’t think I’ve ever said that in my career” after bottom-of-the-table Torquay United had crashed to a 4-0 defeat at Wrexham.

“It was damage limitation. It was a really, really poor defensive performance. We just failed to do the basic elements of defending.

“We conceded the same early goal as last week (at Boreham Wood) with a free header from a corner, with the designated player failing to mark his man, a point I emphasised in the pre-match meeting, and we are a goal down. The second is a cheap free-kick, no marking in the box, with a mistake by the goalkeeper as well.

“We also gave another horror-goal away at the end.”
